Tutoring is one-on-one, with customized lessons, hands-on interactive activities and games, and all lesson materials included. A free half-hour consultation and an assessment begin the process. The founder, Sarah, is a State of Maine Certified Literacy Specialist with more than 13 years of experience working individually and in small groups with striving readers. She earned a bachelor's degree from Smith College and a master's degree from the University of Southern Maine, and holds a current background check. Her approach rests on the belief that all children can learn to read with the right instruction, and that reading develops through explicit instruction in phonics, phonemic awareness, vocabulary, fluency, comprehension and word solving strategies. She works at the edge of a child's learning, adding just enough new material to keep progress moving, and aims to build confidence and an awareness of each student's own learning style. The business sits on Main Street in Westbrook, about 0.2 miles from Riverside Street and Larrabee Road, roughly 0.3 miles from the Maine Turnpike, and about 0.4 miles from an amphitheater. Parents of a first grader, a third grader and an 11-year-old have described growth in reading skill, fluency and confidence, including one homeschooling parent.
