Community Dental traces its origins to 1918, when volunteers occupied a small office in the Children’s Hospital on High Street in Portland to provide dental care to children. By 1921, the American Red Cross had taken over day-to-day operations, and it became known as the Red Cross Dental Clinic. Thirteen years later, on September 28th, the clinic was incorporated under the name of the Children’s Dental Clinic, still operating out of the Children’s Hospital. When the hospital moved its patients to Maine General Hospital, which later became Maine Medical Center, the Children’s Dental Clinic relocated to India Street in February 1948 to provide services at the City Dispensary.

On its 52nd anniversary, the Children’s Dental Clinic became known as the Center for Community Dental Health and expanded its scope of service to include the whole family. The organization continued to expand, opening locations in other areas within southern Maine, reaching up to the Western Foothills and central Maine before changing its name to Community Dental in 2003. It is now a four-center, non-profit oral health care organization. The Portland Center hosts a post-graduate residency for recent dental graduates in collaboration with Tufts University School of Dental Medicine and Maine Medical Center. Community Dental accepts many dental insurance plans, MaineCare, and Care Credit, and all major credit and debit cards. A sliding fee scale is available for patients meeting financial eligibility requirements.
