Trust Tutoring

The tutoring program traces its origin to the experimental work of Lee Havis in Montessori education. In the 1970s, while engaged in Montessori teaching, he set up an in-home instructional program to help children learn at home under what the program describes as the laws of nature. Building on that work, Havis established the International Montessori Trust in 1990 to conduct the tutoring program under the name Trust Tutoring, and he has continued to serve as its executive director supervising the program's projects and activities. After finding conventional evaluation testing burdensome and ineffective with students, Havis created a new standardized test in 1995, the Evaluation of Basic Skills (EBS). The EBS gives age-level equivalents in reading, writing, and math, and is paired with Phonetic Word Tests I and II. Trust Tutoring also trains and certifies test administrators, sells administration manuals, start-up kits, test forms, and phonetic word tests, and maintains a network of tutors and regional directors who carry the program into homes.
