Bertero Basignani’s grandparents, Annunziata and Scandiano Bechini, brought the practice of home winemaking from Italy. Bert bought 10 acres of farmland in Butler, Maryland, in 1972. He married Lynne in 1974, and they planted 60 vines of six different varieties. Bert made wine using his grandmother’s grape press, reading every book available and experimenting with techniques. By 1984, the couple had planted another six acres on adjoining land and began growing vinifera grapes. Federal regulations initially limited Bert to making 200 gallons of wine for home consumption, so the extra fruit was sold to local vineyards while he perfected his craft.

In November of 1986, after winning many amateur winemaking judgings and at the urging of friends, Bert and Lynne started Basignani Winery. Today, they produce 6500 gallons of wine a year. The winery is situated in the rolling hills of northern Baltimore County. Visitors can sip wine in the tasting room or in the pavilion and take a stroll through the vineyards. The winery has received many accolades from wine critics and faithful customers.

The winery offers wine tastings and sales, with specific schedules for weekday sales and weekend tastings. Visitors have access to spacious outdoor covered seating and have noted the availability of pizza on certain days. The winery also maintains a Wine Club for its customers.
