Odyssey Hand Dance Academy of Greenbelt

Odyssey Hand Dance Academy of Greenbelt is a Dance Studio in Greenbelt, MD, located at 9901 Lanham Severn Rd. It holds a rating of 5.00 based on customer reviews.

The academy specializes in teaching Hand Dance, also known as D.C. Hand Dancing or D.C. Swing, a form of swing dance traced back to the 1920s with roots in the Lindy Hop and the Jitterbug. The style involves partners dancing together holding hands, incorporating delicate handwork and smooth footwork with close-in, intricate steps and turns. Although it faded during the disco era, it resurfaced in the 1980s in the D.C. community. In 1993, the Smithsonian Institution recognized Hand Dance as an American Art Form, and the D.C. Council designated it the Official Dance of the District of Columbia.

Owner and instructor Carl Davis founded the academy in the winter of 2020. He began his education in the late 1990s after retiring and settling in the D.C. area, studying under Mr. Lawrence "Brad" Bradford and completing another 10 years of study after graduating from the Smooth & EZ Hand Dance Academy. Davis and his team of instructors have a combined total of over 30 years of teaching experience. The studio creates a fun environment for dancers with little or no experience, meeting students at their skill level to assist them through their learning journey.

Classes are offered at the Lanham Skate Center in Lanham, MD. The academy provides Beginner and Next Level Hand Dance classes on Tuesday evenings from 7:30 PM to 8:30 PM. Students also participate in field trips, which are social dance events designed to practice new skills. The studio recommends ballroom shoes with a suede or felt sole for Hand Dancing, as leather soles can hinder smooth movement. Davis serves students from all around the greater D.M.V. area, aiming to share the Hand Dance experience and introduce new dancers to the community.

Odyssey Hand Dance Academy of Greenbelt offers a welcoming space for residents of Greenbelt, MD, to learn a recognized American art form. With a perfect 5.00 rating from customers, the studio combines decades of instructor experience with a focus on fun and community.
