In 2006, she encountered the phrase "Pura Vida" in Costa Rica, which translates to "pure life" and represents a philosophy of joy, balance, and simplicity. Several years later, after being diagnosed with stage 3c cancer, she retired after 23 years as Camp Director of Pine Valley Day Camp, which she and her husband founded. During her treatment, yoga and Ayurveda became her anchors, drawing on practices she had woven into her life since her early twenties. She began her yoga teacher training during this period of healing.
