The business was founded in 1901 by Hagop Dohanian, who immigrated from Turkey as a teenager and learned the trade within the Boston Armenian community. He initially operated out of his garage before moving to the current brick-and-mortar location, which has remained in the same spot since. The company has survived hurricane and fire damage, the Great Depression, and World War II, evolving through four generations under current leadership by Armen Jr, Adam, and Matthew. Many customers have been with the business for generations, reflecting the trust placed in its century-old expertise.

The cleaning process begins with a pre-cleaning inspection to identify stains and pre-existing conditions. Dry soil is removed using mechanical dusters for pile rugs or vacuums for flatweaves. Rugs are washed on both sides with a specialized, family- and pet-safe detergent, followed by flushing with clean water to remove residue. The rugs are hung to dry, and the next morning they are inspected for additional washing, stain treatment, or finishing touches. Turnaround time is generally two to three weeks, though rush orders are accommodated when possible. The team also offers weekly pickup and delivery services within the regular service area.

Bon Ton Rug Cleansers combines a legacy of four generations of craftsmanship with modern, safe cleaning methods to preserve rugs for Watertown families. Their attention to detail and commitment to quality ensure that rugs remain in excellent condition for years to come.

The business sits on Coolidge Hill Road, just over a tenth of a mile from Filippello Park and Buckingham, Browne and Nichols Fields. It is also within a quarter mile of Sawins Pond Brook and Sawins Pond, and about two fifths of a mile from Arsenal Street.
