Founded in 1983 by owner Dave Kazanjian, Whirlaway began as a specialty running store and has since grown into a regional footwear and apparel destination. The store carries more than 1,000 styles of athletic footwear from top brands, with youth sizes 1 through 6, women's sizes 5 through 12, and men's sizes 6 through 16. Staff are trained in gait and biomechanical analysis, and the store uses an Aetrex foot scanner that creates a digital impression of a customer's foot to recommend inserts and orthotics. Beyond running, Whirlaway stocks footwear, apparel, and accessories for soccer, basketball, football, wrestling, baseball, tennis, volleyball, cheerleading, and walking. Pickleball is a particular focus, with over 500 pickleball paddles and 800 pickleball shoes in stock, along with a demo program that allows customers to try paddles before buying.

The store also operates a team sales program outfitting dozens of colleges, high schools, middle schools, community teams, clubs, and corporate groups with footwear, apparel, uniforms, bags, warmups, and accessories, and hosts in-store group and team events. Over the years, Whirlaway has been voted among the Top 50 Running Specialty Stores eleven times, with Dave Kazanjian supporting local high school athletes both as employees and through donations, sponsorships, and event prizes. Purchases are backed by a 14-day return policy, and gift cards can be purchased in-store or ordered by phone.
