The Literacy Project was founded in 1984 by Dr. Lindy Whiton, Jim Vaughan, and Phil Rabinowitz. Dr. Whiton, a reading specialist, had been hired by Greenfield Community College to run a short-term grant to teach adults to read. After the grant funding ended, Whiton and Vaughan, a volunteer, created an independent non-profit agency and were soon joined by Rabinowitz. With a commitment to teaching adults to read and limited funding, the organization grew quickly, establishing classes in Greenfield, Orange, Northampton, and Ware with the help of dozens of volunteers. In 1987, it was named by the Association for Community Based Education as one of the ten best adult education programs in the country.

Today, the program operates at five locations in the Pioneer Valley: Greenfield, Orange, Northampton, Amherst, and Ware. It employs a staff of about 20 people and a team of about 75 volunteers each year. The Literacy Project offers in-person and live online classes, with enrollment for Fall 2026 beginning on August 24th and classes starting on August 31st. Students can start each month as long as there is room in the class. The curriculum includes adult basic literacy skills, pre-high school equivalency, high school equivalency preparation, and college and career readiness.
