Harpoon began in 1986, when three college buddies, Dan Kenary, Rich Doyle, and George Ligeti, set out to bring the fresh, local beer culture they had experienced traveling in Europe back to Boston. That year the brewery received Brewing Permit #001 in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. The company describes itself as Boston's Original and as brewers of New England's Original IPA, Harpoon IPA, and it is employee owned. Its history spans more than 30 years of brewing, and the beer list has grown to cover IPAs, lagers, stouts, pale ales, wheats, sours, and Belgian styles, including a kettle sour offered as a brewery exclusive. The brewery sits on Northern Avenue in Boston's Seaport district, a short walk from Leader Bank Pavilion and about a tenth of a mile from the Ted Williams Tunnel.
