The Boston University Medical Campus has roots dating back to 1848, when it began as the New England Female Medical College, the first institution in the United States to offer medical education to women and the first to graduate a Black female physician. In 1873, the medical college merged with Boston University, becoming the first coeducational School of Medicine in the nation. Both the Henry M. Goldman School of Dental Medicine and the School of Public Health were founded in 1976. The campus comprises the Chobanian and Avedisian School of Medicine, the School of Public Health, the Henry M. Goldman School of Dental Medicine, and Graduate Medical Sciences, and includes Boston Medical Center as the primary teaching affiliate of the medical school, along with the Solomon Carter Fuller Mental Health Center. Together, the schools employ more than 2,900 full-time, part-time, affiliate, and volunteer faculty members and train nearly 3,800 full-time and part-time students. Faculty and students care for a diverse population of patients at Boston Medical Center and other surrounding hospitals and clinics, with a particular focus on disadvantaged, underserved, and indigent populations. The BU Chobanian and Avedisian School of Medicine is ranked No. 32 among research medical schools and No. 36 in primary care in the 2023 U.S. News and World Report rankings, while the BU School of Public Health ranked sixth among public health schools in the 2022 U.S. News graduate school rankings. The campus operates 28 research cores and is affiliated with 25 hospitals and 12 community health centers.
