The Barnstable County Agricultural Society held its first fair in October 1844 at the County Court House in Barnstable Village. By the late 1800s, the County Fair had become the most popular annual event on Cape Cod. Attractions included livestock and handcraft exhibits, trotting horses, sulky racing, vaudeville acts, motorcycle racing, and food tents featuring clam chowder, homemade doughnuts, pies, and coffee. The Fairs of 1899 and 1920 were particularly successful. The 1899 fair drew approximately 12,000 visitors, with 100 categories and more than 1,200 participants. The 1920 fair was the most financially successful, featuring a new poultry building and baseball games. The society declared its 87th Fair in 1931 to be its last. In 1932, the American Legion attempted to continue the tradition, benefiting from an eclipse that brought 100,000 cars to Cape Cod. A 1939 Tercentennial celebration featured Mayor Dart from Barnstaple, England. During World War II, the grounds hosted circuses and rodeos. In 1954, a committee reestablished the fair for three days in mid-August in Marston’s Mills.
