The business also addresses shy and fearful dogs, helping those cautious of new people, loud noises, trucks, stairs, or other surfaces. It holds a rating of 4.60 based on customer reviews. Gallivan Burwell is the trainer behind the business and a graduate of the Academy for Dog Trainers in San Francisco. Burwell provides private, in-home training and has trained thousands of dogs without using force or fear. He rejects dominance theory, noting that domestic dogs are not pack animals and that the concept of an Alpha dog is based on flawed studies. He explicitly states that a wolf pack is a wolf family. For dogs with fearful or behavioral issues, an initial consultation is required. Additional individual sessions are available as needed. The business was founded in memory of Molly, who passed away on Thanksgiving day in 2010. Molly remains the figurehead for the training philosophy. Professionals such as Dr. Johanna Ecke of Magazine St. Animal Clinic and Jean Donaldson, Director of The Academy for Dog Trainers, have recommended Burwell for his talent in reading and interacting with pets. The business is recognized for its positive rating from the customers who have reviewed it. Gallivan Burwell is cited by Susan Larson, host of The Reading Life on WWNO radio, as combining the qualities of a zen master and a drill sergeant. Upward Dog Training & Counseling of New Orleans brings specialized, credential-backed force-free training to pet owners in New Orleans, LA.
