Owensboro, Kentucky is known as the Bluegrass Music Capital of the World, home to the Bluegrass Music Hall of Fame and Museum, ROMP fest, Bluegrass Unlimited, My Bluegrass Story and the Kentucky Fiddle Championships. The city sits on the south side of a deep bend in the Ohio River and is the county seat of Daviess County, with a city population of 60,131 and a combined city and county population of 114,752. Owensboro's first settler, William Smeathers, built a cabin on the south bank of the Ohio River in 1797, and the original site was called Yellow Banks for the color of the soil along the riverbanks. Daviess County was created by the Kentucky General Assembly in 1815 and named for Joseph Hamilton Daveiss, who died at the Battle of Tippecanoe; the planned town was called Owensborough in memory of Col. Abraham Owen, and the spelling changed to Owensboro in 1893. Coal mining and agriculture, including corn, soybeans and tobacco, have long played a role in the county's history, and the corn production fed into distilling. The area is also part of the Kentucky Bourbon Trail's western reaches, with historic distilleries in Daviess County.
