Hunter Health was founded in 1976 by Dr. Vernon Dyer, a Choctaw and Prairie Band Potawatomi OB/GYN physician, to serve the Urban Native American community in Wichita. The organization initially operated from a room at the Mid-America All-Indian Center before moving to Central and Grove by 1978. In 1980, it became the first program of its kind in Kansas with federal funding. In 1985, it took the name Hunter Health to honor Jay and Vera Hunter, revered Native American elders and educators, and became the first federally funded Community Health Center in the state. It was also recognized as Kansas’ first federally funded Healthcare for the Homeless Center in 1987.
The organization expanded its reach over the decades, adding locations at Brookside United Methodist Church in 1998 and Inter-Faith Ministries of Wichita, now HumanKind Ministries, in 2001. The Brookside and HumanKind clinics were inaugurated in 2010 and 2011, respectively. Hunter Health integrated a comprehensive care model in 2017, reintroduced optometry services in 2019, and launched radiology in 2020. Renovations were completed at the Brookside and HumanKind clinics in 2021 and 2022, and an expansion at the Central Clinic concluded in the summer of 2024.
The clinic maintains a steady record of repeat and referred customers, reflecting the trust of the Wichita community it has served for nearly five decades.
