Aurelio’s Pizza of Hammond is part of the Aurelio’s Pizza franchise system, which traces its origins to August 20, 1959, when the first location opened in Homewood, Illinois. Founder Joe started the business in a small storefront with room for about four tables and a single pizza oven. In the early days, pizza was a new concept, and Joe sold only six or seven pizzas daily, relying on his home-cooked Italian beef sandwiches to sustain the business. He refined his dough and sauce recipes and switched to fresh, homemade Italian sausage rather than pre-cooked varieties, which helped sales grow. Joe worked seven days a week as cook, waiter, and delivery driver, building customer loyalty one person at a time. By 1962, he expanded into two adjoining storefronts at 2045 Ridge Road, formerly Shreiber’s Hardware, creating separate areas for adults and for parties and teenagers featuring a jukebox and red-and-white checker-top tables. The brand maintains a tradition of family, quality products, and community service.
