The Joseph V. Leahy Funeral Home, Inc. has offered distinctive compassion and professional service to its community since founder Joseph V. Leahy opened the doors on June 14, 1975. Joe was known for his jovial way and compassion for everyone he served until his death on June 22, 1998. In 1973, Joseph V. Leahy joined Francis J McCardle to form a new corporation, consolidating McCardle’s small one-chapel establishment on Henry Street. Mayor Francis R. Koenig snipped a ribbon formally opening the new consolidated McCardle-Leahy Funeral Home at 27 Smith Avenue, housed in the former Bruck building. The tradition built by the founder is continued under owner and president Bernard C. Gray. Bernie joined the Joseph V. Leahy Funeral Home, Inc. as a NYS-licensed Funeral Director on July 1, 1988, after employment in funeral service in New York City and Westchester County. He served as Vice-President until the death of Mr. Leahy on June 22, 1998. Since joining the firm, Bernie has taken the funeral home to new levels of personalization and service. He believes that if they fail to offer families every option available, they are not doing their job. Cookie-cutter funerals are a thing of the past, and every service offered is unique and personalized to the family and the loved one they are honoring. Will, Bernie’s son, joined the staff as a registered resident funeral director in 2012 after completing his academic session at the American Academy McAllister Institute of Funeral Service in New York City and passing his National Board Examination. He became a fully licensed funeral director in 2013 after passing the New York State Funeral Directors Exam. Thomas P. Buono, a funeral director, joined the firm in July 2024 as a resident funeral director until completing his licensure in July 2025. He graduated from the American Academy McAllister Institute of Mortuary Science in 2024.
