Matthews Mortuary

Matthews Mortuary is a funeral home in Brownsburg, Indiana. The funeral home was established in August 1946, when Roy Jones of Pittsboro and Keith Matthews of Boswell purchased the undertaking establishment of Evans & Webb and held a public open house that September. Both men were 24 years old at the time and were the youngest funeral directors in Indiana to own their own funeral home. The business was originally known as Jones and Matthews Mortuary and operated from a large two-story house on East Main Street in Brownsburg that was redesigned as a modern funeral home. After Mr. Jones died in 1969, Mr. Matthews became sole owner and operator in June 1970, and his son Steven joined him that August.

Steven Matthews serves as president and funeral director. A lifelong Brownsburg resident, he graduated from Brownsburg High School in 1964 and from Wabash College with honors in 1968, served in the US Army from 1968 to 1970, and graduated with honors from the Indiana College of Mortuary Science in 1971. He taught general and grief psychology at the mortuary college until 1980 and has worked in the Hendricks County Coroner's Office since 1973, serving as elected coroner for 16 of those years. He is a member of the Indiana Funeral Directors Association, the National Funeral Directors Association, and the Indiana State Coroners Association.

The mortuary sits on East 56th Street, about a tenth of a mile from East County Road 600 North and roughly two tenths of a mile from East Northfield Drive. The Brownsburg Post Office is about three tenths of a mile away.
