Vonnora Muay Thai

Vonnora Muay Thai is a martial arts school in Urbana, Illinois, located at 120 Lincoln Square. It teaches Muay Thai, described as one of the most effective striking systems in the world, and presents itself as the only authentic Muay Thai gym in the Champaign-Urbana area. Students learn the techniques that separate Muay Thai from other martial arts while getting a full-body workout, and training takes place in a supportive community setting. Classes run multiple times daily and are offered for a variety of ages and experience levels. A free trial class is available.

The school's coaching is led by two named instructors. Nilahn Vannarath, the retired head coach, taught the advanced classes Monday through Friday. Born in the Isaan region of Thailand, he began training Muay Thai at age 5 and had experience in over 150 fights by the time he turned 18, before moving to America. He spent the last 30 years coaching thousands of students and is a well-known and respected coach in the national Muay Thai community. He has trained alongside fighters including 8x World Champion Coban Lookchaomaesaitong and UFC fighter Spencer Fisher, and was part of the team that helped train Bellator Champion Dan Hornbuckle.

John Boland is the head coach, teaching the all-levels class and private lessons Monday through Friday. Born and raised in Central Illinois, he began training with Nilahn in February 2022, initially to lose weight, and his focus shifted to competition and coaching. He has competed in national tournaments, amateur promotions, and scrimmages, and has lost 50 pounds through his training. He coaches to be a positive influence in his students' lives and shares his passion for Muay Thai in a clear and patient manner.
