The Savoy Company is a Philadelphia-based 501(c)(3) non-profit theatrical organization founded in 1901. It is described as America's and the world's oldest continuously performing theater company performing the works of Gilbert and Sullivan, and it produces one of the thirteen extant works by Sir W.S. Gilbert and Sir Arthur S. Sullivan each year. Its mainstage shows are fully staged, with professionally designed sets, hand-sewn costumes, and professional-quality actors and singers backed by a professional orchestra. The company traces its origins to Alfred Reginald Allen, a young Philadelphia doctor who, after enjoying Gilbert and Sullivan works while traveling in England, decided the operas should be produced in Philadelphia in the original manner. In 1901 he recruited local Philadelphians, serving as the group's conductor while his sister and her friends handled organizational management, and rehearsals were hosted in members' homes. On May 4th, 1901, the ensemble presented Trial By Jury at the Merion Cricket Club, a success that led the three original organizers to form a permanent organization. The company's membership is drawn from the Greater Philadelphia area, and virtually all operations are delegated to committees and production staff made up of company members, with committee chairs and production staff appointed each season by the sitting President. It also supports eligible local charitable organizations through its annual production and pursues community involvement and educational outreach.
