South Suburban Humane Society Adoption Center

South Suburban Humane Society Adoption Center is a pet adoption and animal welfare organization in Richton Park, Illinois. It operates an adoption center alongside a resource center, a low-cost veterinary clinic, and a low-cost spay/neuter clinic, serving pet owners and animals across the Metro Chicago region. The organization cares for and shelters animals in need of protection, provides pet care resources to its communities, and promotes the human-pet bond through adoption services. Its targeted spay/neuter programs address pet homelessness and overpopulation. It holds a rating of 4.50.

The South Suburban Humane Society was incorporated in 1970 as a small group of volunteers who took in homeless pets and worked to find them permanent homes. It has since grown into a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization operating a 19,000-square-foot animal resource campus. Each year it takes in more than 4,000 pets, and its programs reach 20,000 pets and the people who love them annually.

In 2025, the organization recorded nearly 4,000 adoptions and almost 15,000 low-cost veterinary appointments. Its spay/neuter clinic performed more than 10,500 surgeries that year, and volunteers contributed over 15,000 hours. More than 1,500 pets were placed in foster homes, over 5,000 pets were taken in, and more than 4,500 free microchips were provided. Its adoption services include dogs and cats available for adoption, with adoption information available to prospective adopters. Monthly giving supports the care its shelter pets need, from food and lifesaving vaccines to spay/neuter procedures and emergency medical care for sick or injured animals.

The adoption center sits on Central Avenue in Richton Park, part of the South Chicagoland area the organization serves.

The organization pairs a long history of volunteer-led animal rescue with a full animal resource campus, bringing adoption services, low-cost veterinary care, and spay/neuter programs together for pets and their people in Richton Park and the surrounding Metro Chicago communities.
