The company’s history began during the Great Depression when Elmer “Jack” Wentzel faced a shortage of wax for floor finishing jobs. With major suppliers cutting production and raising prices, Wentzel created a water-based finish by melting a block of carnuba wax in a soapy solution and adding shellac for shine. This product proved superior to the solvent-based finishes of the era, and word spread among contractors, leading to the formation of The Dura Wax Company. The business initially operated from a garage in Fox Lake before moving to Volo. In the late 1940s, Jack’s son, Jack Jr., joined the business. After Jack Jr. served in the US Army Signal Corps in France from 1952 to 1956, the company relocated to a new building at 412 Main Street in McHenry. Jack Jr. eventually took over operations, bringing a focus on marketing and business growth.

The facility is located on W Albany St, about a quarter of a mile from South Front Street. It is situated roughly half a mile from the McHenry Dialysis Center. Pebble Creek Park, Rose Lake, and Northwestern Medicine McHenry Hospital are all within three-quarters of a mile of the site. The UPS Store is located about a mile away.
