The ground floor of the building at 226 S Wabash Ave has always been occupied by restaurants. The first establishment, The 226 Club, was founded during the 1920s and featured a speakeasy in its upper balcony. It remains one of the few confirmed locations where gangster Al Capone frequented. Original architectural elements from the speakeasy era remain, including an escape door that led to the basement, which is still visible in the middle of the dining room. Luxurious 1920s art deco details and chandeliers hang above the ceiling of the restaurant’s front entrance and bar area. After Prohibition, The 226 Club closed and was replaced by the Wonder Bar, which operated in the 1930s and 1940s and featured an elaborate bar in the back. In the 1950s, the restaurant was renamed Browns and reinvented as a casual dining establishment with a steam table, hand-carved sandwiches, and peanut shells on the floor. Browns closed in early 1969, and Exchequer Restaurant & Pub opened in September of that year.

The restaurant operates Monday through Wednesday from 11 am to 10 pm, Thursday through Saturday from 11 am to 11 pm, and Sunday from 11 am to 9 pm. It offers both pickup and delivery services.
