Tom and Dianne Latimer started the business in their garage in Grinnell, Iowa. Tom pitched his first big deal, promising to hire more Iowa employees if the client worked with him; the deal closed with Principal Insurance for the building at 801 Grand Ave in Des Moines, and it launched Latitude in 1985. Tom's tenacity built the company and set the template for going after big deals. Today the company has well over 100 employees and more than 60,000 square feet of manufacturing capabilities. Michael McKeag leads the company, and members of the Latitude family are partners, sit on the board, and are engaged in leading it.

The company describes itself as old school when it comes to people, developing relationships and building trust through experts in the field, and valuing conversations about goals, options, budgets, and concerns. Its stated core values are to be trusted and creative professionals who lead with honesty, fairness, and integrity. Latitude Signage + Design also publishes case studies, a featured blog post on transforming spaces and creating experiences with placemaking, and offers lunch-and-learn sessions.
