The business traces its roots to June 3, 1934, when Edward and Josephine Kuba established the original Kuba Funeral Home at 1300 2nd Street S.E., just five days after their marriage. In 1940, the operation moved into a new building across the street to the north at 1228 2nd Street S.E., the address it occupies today. Over the decades the Kuba family added two more locations, purchasing the Janeba Funeral Home on "J" Street S.W. in 1962 and the Brady Funeral Home on 5th Avenue S.E. in 1971, serving a growing share of Cedar Rapids families. Michael Papich, an Iowa-licensed funeral director with more than forty years in the profession, bought the Kuba Funeral Homes from Edward R. Kuba Sr. in 1996 and has owned and operated them since with his wife, Karen "Sue". Papich is a member of Saint Wenceslaus Catholic Church, the Knights of Columbus, the National Funeral Directors Association, and the Iowa Funeral Directors Association, and is active in the Cedar Rapids Czech community through groups including the Federation of Czech Groups, Sokol Cedar Rapids, and the National Czech and Slovak Museum and Library. The current staff assists families with casket and headstone selection, coordination with other funeral homes, and services held in the chapel, a church, or another meaningful location.
