The academy is led by Chief Master Instructor Bill Philips, an 8th degree black belt in the American Taekwondo Association and the owner of the school. Philips was a student at the first ATA school in Ames in 1984 and has been training and teaching in the discipline ever since. He developed his skills through an instructor program that draws on more than thirty years of research and development. The academy maintains low student-to-instructor ratios and uses modern training facilities to deliver instruction in a safe and positive environment. ATA programs are built around individual goals, with instructors working closely with each student through every stage of their training. Since its inception in 1969, the ATA has grown to include more than 1,500 independently owned and operated licensed schools and clubs across the U.S. and worldwide, with over one million students registered. A parent of a current student has noted that the experience helped her son build confidence and self-control both in class and at home.

The academy is located on Main Street in downtown Ames, within about a tenth of a mile of the Ames Public Library, the Ames History Museum, and the Municipal Building, and roughly 100 feet from the Site of First Home in Ames memorial.

With a Chief Master Instructor holding an 8th degree black belt and decades of personal training history in Ames since 1984, the school draws on one of the most experienced martial arts lineages available in central Iowa.
