Savannah’s World Famous Pirates House is located on one of the most historic spots in Georgia, seven blocks west from where General Oglethorpe landed in 1733. It was first opened in 1753 as an inn for seafarers, and fast became a meeting point for pirates and sailors from the Seven Seas. The site was formerly home to Trustee's Garden, the first public agricultural experimental garden in America. The building remained intact through the centuries, but lost its spark and had fallen into disuse after World War II. The property was acquired by the Savannah Gas Company in 1945 and the dilapidated building was slated for demolition. It was saved by Mrs. Mary Hillyer, wife of the president of the company Mr. Hansell Hillyer. Mary, along with some other local ladies, took it upon themselves to restore General Oglethorpe’s vision of Savannah. With great imagination, perseverance, and skill she was able to save the building and renovate it into the restaurant it is today.

The restaurant offers a Southern lunch buffet daily from 11:00 am to 3:00 pm, which includes homemade dessert. Menu items include award-winning fried chicken, fried fish, macaroni and cheese, mashed potatoes and gravy, collard greens, and green beans. Dinner selections include pan seared crab cakes, Savannah crab dip, and Captain Flint's seafood, which features fried catfish served over creamy grits and collard greens.
