The company’s history began in 1878 when Patrick O’Malley and his wife, Winifred Togher, emigrated from County Mayo, Ireland, to Wilmington. Their son, Michael Mealey, originally a furniture upholsterer who furnished casket linings, opened a funeral home in 1912 at the corner of 3rd and Jackson Streets to help ease the grief of impoverished Irish families. In 1935, Michael sold the Jackson Street location and purchased a building on the corner of 7th and Broom Streets, incorporating the business as Michael A. Mealey & Sons, Inc. with his sons Jack and Daniel active in the company.

Charles F. Mealey, Jr., known as Chick, serves as president and funeral director, a role he has held since 1995 when his father retired. Chick has worked at the funeral home since he was old enough to cut grass. He graduated from Salesianum School in 1977, the University of Delaware in 1981, and cum laude from the Pittsburgh Institute of Mortuary Science in 1983.
