Its history began when Patrick O'Malley, originally from County Mayo, Ireland, emigrated to Wilmington, where his surname was transformed to Mealey during the immigration process. His son Michael Mealey, a furniture upholsterer who furnished casket linings, opened a funeral home at the corner of 3rd and Jackson Streets in 1912 out of a desire to help Irish families who could not afford dignified burials. In 1935, Michael relocated the business to the corner of 7th and Broom Streets, converting the lower floors into funeral facilities and living on the upper floors, and he incorporated the company as Michael A. Mealey & Sons, Inc., bringing his sons Jack and Daniel into the business.

The current president and funeral director is Charles F. Mealey, Jr., known as Chick, who has led the firm since 1995 after his father retired and who first began working at the funeral home as a young man cutting grass.
