Katahdin Furniture of New Haven

Katahdin Furniture of New Haven is a furniture store in New Haven, Connecticut. The shop carries custom-made fine furniture and upholstery alongside an array of toys, collectibles and gifts, and it serves shoppers looking for pieces built to last, including reclaimed white pine tables, dressers such as the Vermont Traditions 7/8 Drawer Dresser, Shaker, Mission and Amish style cabinets, and Dash and Albert rugs. Owner Matthew Whiting also takes on consultation work for customers seeking something specific or planning a large project. The store holds a rating of 4.60 from the customers who have reviewed it.

The name Katahdin honors a mountain range in Maine where Whiting spent summers growing up. Whiting approaches each visitor as someone seeking a solution, whether a relative hunting for the right toy for a niece or grandchild, a college student after a lamp for a dorm room desk, or a homeowner needing a dining table sturdy enough for years of family dinners, homework and crafting. He selects the manufacturers the store works with and brings in unique pieces. His background includes formal training in French cooking, and the shop's blog features recipes such as apple pie, beef bourguignon and French croissants.

The store sits on Whitney Avenue in downtown New Haven, near the corner with Temple Street. Art Center Mini-Park and Phelps Triangle are both about a tenth of a mile away, as are The Community Foundation Building and Flex School.

Katahdin Furniture has more than two decades of experience in specialty furniture, upholstery and gifts, and customers describe the owner as soft spoken, pleasant and down to earth. Shoppers note the selection of furniture, dishes and decor. For a city of New Haven's size, that combination of custom upholstery, reclaimed wood pieces and a toy and gift selection under one roof is a distinctive mix.
