Anchor Spa is a bar in New Haven, CT, located at 272 College St. It holds a 4.10 rating based on 149 reviews. The venue revived the legacy of a New Haven institution that originally opened in 1933 in Milford, Connecticut, before moving to its current location in 1939. Restaurateur Albert “Al” M. Levett founded the business, designing the building with a deep ocean-blue Art Moderne facade of porcelainized metal panels and glass. Levett targeted patrons from nearby theaters and Yale University, creating a theatrical atmosphere that included curved booths, a famed jukebox, and a basement speakeasy called the Mermaid Room. The location attracted notable figures such as playwright Thornton Wilder, writer Wally Lamb, and celebrities including Lucille Ball, Douglas Fairbanks, Jr., George C. Scott, Jim Morrison, and Jodie Foster. After Levett’s death in 1961, bartender Bill Nutile and his wife Grace took over, evolving it into a family business. The Anchor closed in January 2015 after nearly 80 years, but an online petition with over 1200 signatures helped revive the name. In June 2016, the venue reopened as Anchor Spa.
The current team includes Karl Franz, a Yale graduate and spirits professional who has passed the B.A.R. mixology course. Franz represents D’USSE Cognac and has consulted for major spirits producers. The design and atmosphere were crafted with input from architect Deverell, who has worked on projects for brands like Coach and Tiffany & Co. The dining room features antiques sourced from English Builders Market on Chapel Street. The menu highlights coastal history with a dedicated seafood section, as well as land-based options like bison tacos and cheeseburger sliders. The bar also offers unlimited free popcorn.
Anchor Spa is known for its positive rating from the customers who have reviewed it and an established track record built on a large base of customer reviews. The venue is recognized for its enduring cocktail program and its role as a community hub in New Haven. The bar’s history as a favorite watering hole for actors, artists, and Yale students continues to influence its atmosphere today.
Anchor Spa combines its rich history as a New Haven landmark with a modern cocktail program and diverse menu, offering a unique experience for locals and visitors alike.
