KIMCAN Academy

KIMCAN Academy is a tutoring service in Hamden, Connecticut. It offers private individual tutoring and small group tutoring for K-12 students in math, reading, language arts, and SAT Prep, along with homework help, enrichment courses, and college preparation. The academy serves families in Hamden and across New Haven County, with sessions available Monday through Friday from 10am to 4pm, weekday evenings from 4pm to 7pm by appointment, and Saturdays by appointment.

KIMCAN Academy was founded by Roxana Walker-Canton, who serves as Director and Master Tutor. She earned an undergraduate degree in French and Spanish from Spelman College, a dual MA/MFA in Black Studies and Creative Writing from The Ohio State University, and an MFA in Film & Media Arts from Temple University. She taught film production and film studies at public and private universities for more than 15 years. The academy grew out of her wish, as an educator and a parent of three children, to give students a path to academic success through one-on-one tutoring, small group tutoring, homework help, and academic enrichment.

The academy's approach centers on personalized learning, which it uses to ease the academic anxiety or boredom students often bring to schoolwork. Its enrichment courses introduce students to creative arts and culture, built on the premise that all students have a thirst for knowledge. KIMCAN Academy also keeps parents informed about open houses, session dates, enrichment courses, community discussions, and special events.

KIMCAN Academy is located at 2911 Dixwell Avenue, Suite B7, on Dixwell Avenue in the Centerville neighborhood. The Hamden Police Station, Miller Memorial Library, and Hamden Town Hall all sit about a tenth of a mile away, and Hamden Fire Department Station 4 is a similar distance from the academy.

KIMCAN Academy pairs one-on-one and small group instruction with enrichment in the creative arts, giving Hamden families a local option for K-12 tutoring, homework help, and college preparation.
