The Browne family's involvement in the area reaches back to 1883, when J. Francis Browne joined the family home furnishing business serving the Thompsonville section of town. Born into a family of hard workers, he started a second career as a licensed funeral embalmer. From 1883 into the 1920s he operated out of the Browne Furniture store at the corner of Pearl Street and High Street in Thompsonville. The furniture company delivered furniture and household items by horse and wagon and transported caskets the same way. At that time the heart of Thompsonville's commerce was the Bigelow carpet factory, and many of the factory workers and their families lived in tenement buildings. To get caskets into those homes, windows or doorways often had to be dismantled, and hoists and pulleys were used to winch caskets up to second or even third floor apartments. Some of the old colonial houses in town had casket doors specially designed to accommodate caskets. Demand for J. Francis Browne's embalming services grew to become a main staple not only in Thompsonville but across the entire Enfield community, and the Browne family transformed the business to keep pace.
