When his brother changed his mind, George Kukar pivoted the concept. Lorraine Riddle was hired to run the kitchen while George Kukar managed the bar. Using a World War II army surplus oven, they operated the restaurant while George worked at San Jose Steel during the day. After seven years, the restaurant became self-sustaining. In 1976, the building was moved 75 feet to accommodate street expansion, retaining its 395 Almaden Ave address. In 1985, following a petition signed by 14,000 customers to save the restaurant from the construction of the San Jose Convention Center, the business relocated two blocks south to its current location.

George Kukar passed away in 2004 at age 87 after 54 years as owner. He was a registered Costanoan-California Mission Indian, and Native American influenced decor remains throughout the restaurant. Today, George’s three daughters Joan, Sandy, and Patty help with the restaurant, while his son George handles the day-to-day business. The restaurant offers graduation week accommodations and food delivery with DoorDash.
