Compton is known as the Hub City for its location near the geographical center of Los Angeles County. It is one of the oldest cities in the county and the eighth to incorporate, settled in 1867 by thirty pioneering families led by Griffith Dickenson Compton, who had traveled south from Stockton in search of a living outside the gold fields. The settlers purchased 4,600 acres from F.P.F. Temple and F.W. Gibson at five dollars an acre, land that had been part of Rancho San Pedro. They built a schoolhouse that also served as a church and civic gathering place, and the settlement became known as Compton in 1869. The city incorporated on May 11, 1888, with a population of 500, and held its first City Council meeting days later.
