The vineyard is situated in Penryn, CA, on the family’s mandarin property at Mandarin Hill Orchards. Owners Rick and Jacque grew up in Placer County and have two daughters. Rick’s interest in wine began in the early 2000s during a camping trip with his sisters. By 2013, the idea of owning a vineyard became a plan, facilitated by Jacque’s father, Tom Aguilar, who had unplanted land on the property. With help from family and friends, the first acre of Malbec grapes was planted in the spring of 2014. The vineyard expanded the following year with Malbec and Nebbiolo, and has since added Tempranillo and Roussanne grapes.

The name Happy Dayz honors Jacque’s grandfather, Frank Aguilar, who started farming on the property in the 1940s and would say, “Cheers to Happy Dayz!” The mandarin shed on the property is open to the public daily from November through mid-January. Each year, the winery dedicates its Rosé to the Down Syndrome community and donates 21% of all bottles produced to GiGi’s Playhouse in Sacramento. The business also hosts events at its location.
