The restaurant occupies a building with its own history. It was originally the Johnston family residence, a ranch-style, slump block home designed and built by D. D. Castleberry in 1966 for Jim and Virginia Johnston and their sons Joe, Steve, and Paul. During planning for Agritopia, a restaurant tied to the urban farm was envisioned as a focal point for the project, and that vision guided the redevelopment of the home into Joe's Farm Grill. The 1960s look was preserved and updated into a modern, mid-century burger stand, blending indoors and outdoors around the peaceful setting created by the large trees. Much of the original house remains: the dining room with its fireplace is the former family room, the kitchen stands where the bedrooms used to be, and the home's kitchen and dining room were removed to create the atrium. Agritopia itself contains approximately 12 acres dedicated to permanent urban organic farming.
