In 1947, Hazel and Roland Troxell started Southern Furniture out of the back of a used station wagon after Roland left the insurance business and launched his first mercantile route. He soon hired other routemen to expand the operation and opened an office with a small showroom in the basement of a store at the corner of Broadway and Rosser. As the business grew, he took over the entire building and later relocated to another building on Hill Street, where he kept expanding by knocking out walls whenever the neighboring business next door went out or moved. Throughout this period, he maintained mercantile routes all over East Arkansas.

In 1964, Roland bought land and built a new building on N. Washington Street, moving away from downtown. The new building had 11,000 square feet on the main floor and about 6,000 square feet upstairs. In 1984, Glenn and Jo Troxell Patterson purchased the business from Roland and Hazel. Twenty years later, in 2004, the Pattersons moved the store once again, this time north of town, into a new 20,000 square foot building all on one level with the warehouse in back. That current location on N. Washington Street is where the store continues to operate today.
