The library began in 1957 as part of the Calhoun County Library, when the Town and Realty Company provided an 8 foot by 17 foot space for a collection of books. A high school student served as librarian, paid by the Jacksonville Book Club. In 1958 more clubs joined a building fund and the library moved into city hall, and in 1959 it moved into the recreation center. In 1963 Mrs. A. C. Shelton was appointed librarian to keep the library open 20 hours per week instead of nine. In 1983-1984 the library doubled its floor space by moving into the old post office building, constructed of white Alabama marble in 1940. By 1984 circulation reached 39,112 under librarian Kathryn Childress. In 2011 an annex was added, including an elevator, and the library began offering more classes and programs for all ages.
The library sits on Pelham Road South, about a tenth of a mile from the Jacksonville Fire Department and roughly two tenths of a mile from the MAJ Dwayne Williams Memorial, Ten Oaks, the John Pelham Monument, and Public Square East.
Its positive rating reflects the customers who have reviewed it, and the library has served Jacksonville since 1957.
