The SCA is an immersive history group where participants, dressed in clothing of the period, can experience tournaments, royal courts, feasts, and dancing, and learn how to recreate crafts and skills of the pre-17th century world. Activities include fighting, fencing, archery, art competitions, classes and workshops, youth activities, feasts, and royal or baronial court. The SCA dates back to May 1, 1966, when a few friends who were history buffs and science fiction/fantasy fans hosted an outdoor party in Berkeley, California. The invitation called for “all knights to defend in single combat the title of ‘fairest’ for their ladies.” This event, now known as the First Tournament, was a big success. The SCA’s “Known World” is divided into twenty regions called kingdoms, and within the kingdoms there are hundreds of local SCA groups, Cantons, Shires, and Baronies. The Board of Directors is the governing body of the Society for Creative Anachronism, focusing on the SCA’s mission, strategy, and goals. They establish and maintain the rules for all of the Society’s activities and administration.
The SCA provides liability coverage for its chapters and maintains rules and standards throughout the Society. Membership allows participants to save money on event fees, gain voting privileges, and subscribe to their kingdom’s newsletter. The Signorotti Membership Assistance Fund is available to support those participants who may find it difficult to continue their memberships. The Laurel Sovereign of Arms is the chief heraldic officer of the Society and the head of the College of Arms, responsible for fostering the study and practice of heraldry.
