About Juneau Animal Rescue

Juneau Animal Rescue is a pet store in Juneau, Alaska, serving pet owners and homeless animals throughout the community and its outlying areas. The organization adopts out dogs, cats, and small animals, and operates a range of related programs including dog boarding, doggy daycare, a weekly vaccine and microchip clinic, self-grooming, spay and neuter services, and animal control and protection work contracted by the City and Borough of Juneau. It holds a rating of 4.30 from customer reviews.

Juneau Animal Rescue is a private, non-profit shelter rather than a government entity, and the income from its fee-based programs helps fund its mission of promoting animal welfare and strengthening the animal-human bond. The shelter was founded in 1963, when community members collaborated to help disadvantaged and homeless animals and originally filed Articles of Incorporation with the State of Alaska under the name Gastineau Humane Society. The original shelter was a small shed located under the bridge over Gastineau Channel; the current facility was built in 1984 with money raised by volunteers. The staff is led by Executive Director Rick Driscoll and Deputy Director Andy Nelson, and includes an HR coordinator, a clinic director who is also the staff veterinarian, an assistant clinic director who is a licensed veterinary technician, a doggy daycare coordinator, animal control officers, kennel technicians, and a customer service and volunteer coordinator. Office hours run Monday through Saturday from 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., with visiting hours for adopters from 1:00 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. and closures on Sundays and major holidays.

The shelter sits on Glacier Highway and is reached by turning onto the road from Egan Drive, which passes about four-tenths of a mile away. The Mendenhall Wetlands State Game Refuge lies roughly a mile and a half from the site, and the Glacier Fire Station is about a mile and three-tenths away along the same corridor.

Juneau Animal Rescue has served the community for more than 60 years and remains the principal shelter for stray, abandoned, and surrendered pets in Juneau.
