Ahtna, Incorporated

Ahtna, Incorporated is an Alaska Native regional corporation headquartered in Glennallen, Alaska, at 115 Richardson Hwy. Established under the Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act of 1971, it is one of 12 Alaska Native Regional Corporations created by Congress. The corporation is owned by more than 2,300 shareholders, the majority of whom are of Ahtna Athabascan descent, and many shareholders still reside in the Ahtna region, the traditional homeland of the Ahtna people. Ahtna operates under the direction of a thirteen-member board of directors, all of whom are shareholders elected by fellow shareholders at the annual meeting, with four to five directors typically elected each year to staggered three-year terms. Six board seats are elected by shareholders from the villages of Cantwell, Cheesh'na, Gakona, Gulkana, Mentasta, and Tazlina, two seats by holders of Kluti-Kaah voting class stock, and five at-large seats by holders of all classes of voting stock. In 1980, seven of the eight village corporations in the Ahtna region chose to merge with Ahtna. The corporation maintains a second office at 110 West 38th Avenue, Suite 100, in Anchorage. Its stated mission is the wise stewardship of Ahtna lands and responsible economic growth for future generations of Ahtna people, guided by values of respect, unity, safety, and quality.
