Bear Creek Winery of Angoon

Bear Creek Winery of Angoon is a winery in Angoon, Alaska. It produces hand crafted fruit wines and fruit and grape wine blends, with 15 varietals available for tasting at any time. The range runs from dry wines such as the Alaska Chardonnay, made with rhubarb, to medium-bodied blends such as the Blueberry Mirlo, a combination of Merlot and blueberry, and sweet wines including Pomegranate wine and Alaskan Port. The winery also offers pairing suggestions, such as Blu Zin with chicken alfredo or tomato bisque, and Strawberry Rhubarb with honey glazed salmon, green salad with black pepper, and brie. Its wines are recognized internationally and are a favorite locally. It holds a rating of 4.90 from customer reviews.

The winery began as a hobby for Bill Fry in the mid 1990s, after he sampled a friend's homemade rhubarb wine. Production started with a few small glass carboys on the kitchen counter and soon outgrew the kitchen, moving to the garage, where Bill experimented with raspberries, blueberries, kiwi, rhubarb and other fruits. Bill and Dorothy opened Bear Creek Winery and Lodging in 2003, batching wine in 5-gallon carboys, printing labels from a home computer, and buying fruit from neighbors. A new timber frame production facility was completed in the summer of 2011. Their son-in-law, Louis Maurer, moved to Homer in 2010, learned and collaborated alongside Bill and Dorothy, and became head winemaker in 2013. Glacier Bear Wines were introduced in 2015 as a sister brand, made only from Alaskan grown fruit, with recipes developed by Louis Maurer.

The winery also offers lodging with two themed suites and one apartment, each with a private bath and sitting area, flat screen TV, outdoor gas grill and free Wi-Fi, plus access to a hot tub and fire pit. Rooms include a complimentary bottle of wine, Alaskan-made chocolate, tea and local K-bay coffee. The apartment has a full kitchen, while the suites have kitchenettes and include breakfast vouchers for nearby restaurants.

The tasting room sits on Bear Creek Dr. Winter season hours run 12 to 6 pm daily after Labor Day through mid May, and summer season hours run 11 to 6 pm daily from mid May through Labor Day.

The winery's wines have earned international recognition and a local following, and its rating of 4.90 reflects the response of the customers who have reviewed it.
